Nature Journaling Class with Alma of A Wild Braid
October 19, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Nature Journaling Class with Alma of A Wild Braid
As a public school teacher, Alma conducted many lessons outdoors and taught nature journaling – the practice of drawing, making observations, and asking questions about the natural world and keeping a record of these in a notebook – to children to help them gain an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world because, in the words of the Senegalese environmentalist, Baba Dioum, “we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”
Now she teaches nature journaling to adults because adults also benefit from time spent in nature! For adults, nature journaling is not only a way to connect to what we love. It is also a way of making space in our modern, busy and stressful lives for rest, wonder, play, joy and even to process grief over climate change related losses.
All basic sketching materials (paper, pens, pencils) will be provided but you are welcome to bring your favorite sketchbook and tools. We will start inside but also spend some time outside in the patio area, some may even want to walk over to the West Seattle Nursery, so please dress appropriately for the weather.
There is a sliding scale fee structure for this class so that anyone who is interested can attend.
If you are currently experiencing financial strain this class is free. Please indicate this option at time of registration.
For folks with more resources, the suggested fee is $25 – $50. Enrollment is limited to 6 participants.
