Over the holiday season, one of our lovely customers, gave us these beautiful  cranes.  Origami cranes have long been symbols of hope and healing during challenging times.  Not wanting to hoard them all, I decided that a spring display would remind folks how good it feels to give back to our community.

Well the world has shifted since my last post, but one thing stays the same…community.  We are so fortunate to live in such a supportive, creative and progressive part of the world. We all understand the importance of inclusion, kindness, acceptance and supporting each other through the good and the bad times.  That’s what neighbors do!

C & P is proud to support many local organizations and hope that you will join us, either with financial contributions (accepted at the coffee shop) or by volunteering your time.  We welcome new opportunities to be involved, so keep us posted on organizations or events that are important to you.

The West Seattle Helpline is a nonprofit social service agency offering emergency assistance for our West Seattle neighbors.  Our mission is to empower our neighbors to regain their self-sufficiency after facing an emergency or unexpected hardship.  We fulfill our mission by providing information, referrals, clothing, bus tickets, and rent and utility assistance to help low-income families in need.  We strive to strengthen our community through our philosophy of “neighbors helping neighbors.”

Now that the rains have come, stop by C & P and settle in with a great book. You can find some amazing local authors in our new WordsWest Library.  Come celebrate the unveiling of a new library featuring a book by every author who has read at WordsWest. The WordsWest Community Reading Library will serve to promote authors as well as serve as an inspiring, free resource available for patrons of C & P Coffee Co. to read at their leisure while in the coffee shop.

This is no average literary event, but then again, West Seattle is not your average community!
Every third Wednesday, 7pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to guided writing explorations. Each month we also host a community member to share his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project.

Favorite Poem by and Dessert Benefit for West Seattle Food Bank

Alma García’s short fiction has been published as an award-winner in Narrative Magazine, Enizagam, Passages North, and Boulevard; has most recently appeared in Kweli Journal, Duende and Bluestem; and appears in the anthology, Roadside Curiosities: Short Stories on American Pop Culture (University of Leipzig). A past recipient of a fellowship from the Rona Jaffe Foundation, she makes her home in Seattle, where she teaches fiction writing at the Richard Hugo House and is a private editing consultant as well as a violin instructor. She recently completed her first novel.

Imani Sims is a stiletto loving Seattle native who spun her first performance poem at the age of fourteen. Since then, she has developed an infinitely rippling love for poetry in all of its forms. She believes in the healing power of words and the transformational nuance of the human story. Imani works to empower youth and adults through various writing courses and interdisciplinary shows all over Washington. She is a 2015 Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Fellow and 2015 Jack Straw Fellow. She is the author of three books of poetry: Twisted Oak, Beloved: Collision and the October 2016 (A)live Heart.

I know not everyone is excited about the change of seasons, but I love the focus from outdoors to indoors. Cozy dinners with family and friends, festive holiday get together and PARTIES!!! Please consider C & P for  your holiday gatherings. We have lots of room and best of all, we do the cleaning up.

Our flexible venue includes:

• A stage for performers
• Front and back patio as well as outdoor garden spaces
• Great parking lot to for food trucks

Our capacity is around 50 inside and 100 plus when including the outdoor spaces.

We will gladly help you arrange caterers, florists, live music , photographers or whatever else is needed to make your special occasion fantastic.

Our rental rate is $125.00 per hour (commercial rates available on request). We have a three hour minimum rental on the weekends. A $50.00 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your date.

PAELLA Feast!

Celebrate one of the last of 2016’s summer weekends at C&P Coffee for a paella feast courtesy of Joey Serquinia, Chef de cuisine of Harvest Vine, plus beer & wine, Spanish guitar, and Cupcake Royale cupcakes!  All proceeds support emergency services at the West Seattle Helpline.

Hey Neighbors, its July, which means Stuff the Bus for WestSide Baby!

If you don’t know about West Side Baby, the are an awesome organization founded in 2001 by a new mom who recognized the stresses of caring for an infant. westsidebaby.org

They are the only social service agency in West King county area that collects, inspects and distributes free diapers, clothing, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. More than 120 local social service agencies, including shelters and food banks, rely upon WestSide Baby to provide critical necessities for low-income families.

Why Diapers?

• One in three parents in the USA has experienced diaper need
• A month’s supply of diapers can cost $100 per child
• Diapers are not covered by government assistance programs such as food stamps or WIC
• Desperate parents resort to cleaning out and reusing soiled diapers, or wrapping their children in towels, coffee filters or Ziploc bags

You can help by donating cash or bringing a new package of diapers (any size) to C & P during the month of July and we will buy you a coffee for your donation!
